I’m pretty sure every human being in this world would wonder how it feels to fly. To be momentarily suspended on air, your feet of the ground and you float for more than 5 seconds.

Well, like everyone else, I dreamed to fly.

When I went to Nepal last October, I browsed through the activities I could do during my stay.

Apart from seeing the tallest mountain on earth, Mt. Everest, I just had to do something for the first time – flying!

Well, paragliding to be specific.

I have told my friends who went to Nepal to try paragliding. It is really safe and one experience you will cherish.

Here are the things you need to do to make this experience come true.

– Book your flight a few days in advance. We went on October when it’s peak season and slots do fill up.

– For paragliding, a pilot will be paired to you and both of you will be strapped in for flight. So don’t worry. you don’t need to be experienced in anything to do this. all you have to do is ride.

– We booked through Himalayan Encounters and sometimes in a city you are not familiar with, it is best to have a travel agent or a tour guide.

– They have four scheduled times to fly during the day. It also depends on the weather and winds for best time to fly. Don’t worry to much about this, trust that they will tell you the best time to fly.

– We met at their office that will take us about 25 minutes uphill to the Sarangkot mountain top where you are already 1,400 meters above sea level.

– After driving, you need to hike up a little bit, this was my warm-up. There’s a point where vans can’t have access to, so off you go and walk!

– They will prepare the shoot and your seat/strap.

– I suggest you take the option with photos so you can document your flight! I mean this is a pretty expensive activity, might as well document it to last forever! They have go pro cameras that will capture your moment. You can bring your own gear too if you want, I had my DSLR strapped to my neck the entire time.

– This costs only additional $22 dollars or 1700 Nepali Rupees

– Bring sun glasses – the sun is harsh

– long sleeves and pants if you want to protect your skin from the sun. It was windy and chilly in October so it’s okay,

– and bring sunscreen!

– So once the shoot and you’re all strapped in, the pilot will be by your back and he will tell you to run towards the cliff!

– WHAT?

– Did I tell you I’m afraid of heights? Yes very much so! But I somehow found a way to overcome this. I stop thinking and just do it!

– These pilots are trained and I trust them. SO RUN I DID!!!

– I didn’t think of anything else but just running towards that cliff! i was too nervous and stunned to document this moment and did not take a video or photo of it 🙁

– and next thing I knew, i was running with my feet not touching the floor already. I was flying!!!

– hallelujah!!!

– As you enjoy the ride, take photos, enjoy the view of the himalayas 🙂 Enjoy flying atop Pokhara Lake, but don’t wonder about where you’re gonna eat later because if you have a not-so-adventurous stomach, you would feel like vomiting mid way. AND I DID!

– Apparently, this is normal, so the pilot just asked me to tilt to my left and be free to barf. yes.

Here are the signs when the pilots can tell if someone is about to barf mid air:

1. Silence

2. Head bops more than usual

3. They curl with their tummies and clinch fist

4. They ask questions like – how long are we gonna be flying or when/where do we land?

As for me, I just told him directly – hey I need to vomit

– If you are more adventurous (or crazy lol) you can ask them to do a few tricks for you like summersault on air or do a 360 rollercoaster thing. Whatever – do whatever floats your banana boat!

– The pilots can control the height of the shoot. You can fly higher, and of course you need to fly lower if you’re ride is about to be done for landing. You will land at the space near the lake. So I’m thinking, In case I fall, I fall into water.

Since I’ve been ranting on Twitter, I might as well write a blog post.

It was hard enough squeezing my words down to 140 characters, then I’d have to spam my follower’s twitter feeds.

I love this tattoo… It changed my life. Changed my mindset. Without experiencing this, I wouldn’t have learned the truth… The truth that I can overcome a painful experience like this. I had to be brave.

I’ve been wanting a tattoo for the longest time. But I’ve been holding it for 4 years at least, I just haven’t found the right moment, the right design and the right artist.

DESIGN

I thought of a lot of things. That silly idea of putting a barcode behind my neck, (no offense to those who have barcode tattoos) but I just thought there was no special meaning to it whatsoever. I thought of getting a sexy cat design because I love cats, and it needs to be a sexy cat because a fat kitty won’t look hot on my skin. Butterfly. It’s cute, but what am I going to do with it? “Wala lang?” Surf board. I love surfing, but I don’t know which part of my body I can put it without looking weird. Also, if I put a surfboard, the design must be big. I can’t take BIG… not yet.

The most stupid (and funny perhaps) suggestion were from my friends. Since they know I love pole so much, they suggested that I get a tattoo of a pole… T__T

One vertical line from my neck, all the way down my spine. POLE. facepalm how silly… but I admit it’s really funny. Then they say put a woman on it… hellz no! It would just look too sleezy.

LOCATION

I’ve been looking for tattoo artists in the Philippines. Â Manila, Boracay, Bohol etc.

Yes, they’re good. Â But I didn’t have a design and my heart wasn’t whole.

Then, I had a huge feeling that I am not going to get my first tattoo in the Philippines. Â I travel a lot, and my inner-being suggested that I explore tattoo places on foreign destinations next time.

Another “location” in this matter is the “where” in my body.

Where am I going to put my tattoo? It was so vague, so I decided to make up my mind when I already have the design. Â I don’t want my first time to hurt, so I’d want it to be in a place where it hurts less. (yeah right)

TIMING

The timing is important because this is where my heart beats. Â I may have a design, or the location, but when my heart doesn’t beat for it… I cannot do it!

Nepal was an enlightening experience for me. Â It opened my mind, soul and spirit in so many ways. Â I had to experience a different culture and way of living, to touch my inner-self. Â Buddhism. Hinduism. Â The most common religion I’d see around Nepal. Â If I’m not mistaken, Nepal is 70% in Hindu practice, and then the rest comes Buddhism, Muslim etc.

I can’t put into details, but here’s the gyst.

I understood.

I completely understood.

That my external surroundings, I have no control of. Â But I definitely have control over my own being. Â It’s a change of mindset. Â Buddha seeked enlightenment. Â I don’t think I’m close to Nirvana, but this is one big step to self-presence. Â I was aware, that my mind and the way I perceive myself, and how I react to my surrounding is more powerful than FEAR, pain, uncertainty, stress, heartbreak… etc.

Nepal was really fun, but it was such a difficult emotional experience for me too. Â One that I cannot put into detail. Â One I think I couldn’t survive without breaking down emotionally somewhere in the trip.

To my surprise, my crybaby eyes shut down and listened to my spirit for one moment.

🙂 I think I’ve matured, grown. Â I saw clearly the things that mattered and didn’t.

I had friends in Nepal. Â All of them contributed to my journey. Â Most especially the Tattoo Artist.

TATTOO ARTIST

I found a small tattoo and piercing place by the city center in Pokhara, Nepal. Â It reminded me so much of how I wanted to get a Tattoo. Â When I saw it – I felt my HEART BEATING.

This was it. Â I have never felt my heart beat for a Tattoo place like thi. Â Not anywhere else, but here (Nepal). Â I got the timing (heartbeat), and the location right but I didn’t have the design yet.

I went inside the tattoo place just to check it out. Â I didn’t have to decide right then and there (although it would have been spontaneously fun, but with a risk of regret).

The artist’s wife greeted me by the entrance. Â The artist was quick to notice “Hello,” he said.

He was doing a tattoo job for another ink virgin. Â He was a guy, he looked perfectly comfortable and excited. Â Not a trace of pain in his face. Â “This is a good sign.” I said to myself.

LET’S DO THIS!

I decided in my head, but I haven’t seen his samples yet. Â I was already convinced. Â But it wouldn’t hurt to double check. Â Yep, he was good. Â His expertise is – in the make-up world we call it – blending. Â He specializes in tattoos that are realistic. Â Complicated, full of shades, depth and colors.

I LOVE IT!

I asked for a design book. Â Some were his own designs. Â Some more general.

He gave me the “pop” book. Â Americanized designes, cute unicorns, the sexy kittens I wanted before, a sexy scorpion (my zodiac). Â Meh… nice, cute sexy, but my heart didn’t beat for them. Â First impressions of me of course – one naive girl who wants a tattoo because she wants to.

It wasn’t what I was after.

I asked for traditional Nepali designs. Â A design that has a flavor of Nepal.

Check out the artist’s designs here.

Then I saw Shiva. I don’t know what kind of a Shiva god it was (there are many gods), but I saw the symbol “Om” ॐ somewhere in the design.

“I want this.”

and I decided to put it on my nape.  I think it’s the only right place to put ॐ.  I think it puts balance to my body.  and besides, it would rest on my spine, where my nerves flow.  The life of my body, the electric, biological current that influences my state of mind and body, where my body transmits pain and pleasure etc.

This is it. Â I’m doing it. and I voiced out all my concerns

is it safe?

I don’t know how to take care of it

Could I shower? Enjoy paragliding tomorrow?

Does it hurt? Can I tolerate the pain?

The neck. Â I heard it hurts especially in that area… But I didn’t even ask this question anymore, I didn’t care how painful it would get.

He addressed all of my concerns. Â He was very nice, chatty. Â He wanted to get to know me too like I wanted to get to know him. Â I think he wanted feel my character too, to match if the design I picked fits me.

About “Om”

I don’t know much about it except that I hear it in Yoga class. Â Something relaxing… Something that makes me feel good.

Then I researched and heard it has so many meanings. Â But the important one is that “Om” is the shortest mantra. Â A mantra – sound or group of words that usually helps in meditation binaural beats

and considered capable of creating “transformation.”

I heard people voicing their mantras when I went around the Stupa.

His name is Anands. He changed my life.

Know more about Anands, the Tattoo artist in Nepal in his website:Â anandstattoo.com

THE PAIN

This was the most crucial part. Â The getting of the tattoo.

FOR REALZZZ!

There was no turning back. Â I felt the needle. Â I think I could make it – for the first 5 seconds that is…

I thought the pain would go away, but after 2 minutes of that initial pain (he just did the outline), I nearly vomitted!

Of course it was painful! Â I could hear and feel the drill especially when it passes my spine’s bone part.

I stood up, I said I needed a break.

He was concerned.

I was concerned that he is concerned. Â He just finished an 8-hour tattoo. Â He was tired. More tired than me, and if he still needed to get my tattoo done. Â The more I get him tired, the greater risk my tattoo won’t be as best as it should be.

I decided to cooperate.

I coudln’t back-out… I WOULD NOT. I had no intention to.

“OK, let’s do this,” I said.

“Listen to me.” Anands said instructively…

“Inhale deeply, now hold it for 5 seconds… Exhale”

“Take your time in doing this, just keep on repeating it.”

Then I realized what he was doing. Â He was teaching me how to meditate. Â And scientifically, this meditating exercise helped bring oxygen to my cells and helped my blood’s circulation.

I did as instructed.

UH-MAZING! Â for the entire 10 minute of being under the gun, I only took breaks to stretch my back. Â PAIN TOLERATED! Â Of course it’s still there, but for such a weakling like me… it felt so bad-ass to go through with it without actually barfing!

MEDITATION… wow. Â It’s FREEDOM! It freed me from pain… moments after this, I realized I could free my worries, anxieties etc. Â just meditate.

and before I thought of meditaion as a boring hobby. Â You sit there doing nothing. inhale, exhale… what do you even think about?

This whole exercise changed my life. Â It controlled my emotions which I have so many of. Â That, I needed so much on my life. Â And lately, I see my self in my friends too. Complains, confusion, a mix of emotions. Â Been there, done that. Â I am still on my journey towards enlightenment (I’m not Buddhist, I’m just a weakling trying to rise up). Â I’m not perfect, not close to being one… and I still get ticked a few times (traffic in Manila, hello). Â But it helped me mature in so many ways.

I think, meditation is the key to get smokers to quit smoking, for those in grief, to those in rehab… for people with a whole lot of emotional baggage like me.

It’s time to move on. Â I highly recommended pole dancing because it ended my quarter life crisis. Â Now if pole dancing isn’t really for you, try meditation.

There are two kinds of problems in life – external and internal. Â You can’t do anything about the external, you can’t control or manipulate it no matter how hard you try. Â But if you touch the inner-self, you would also begin to know how to react to your external problems in a way that would benefit you.

Let’s not cloud our minds with negativity and things we cannot change.

Let us move on.

Go beyond our fears, failures, mistakes and devastations.

xoxo,

Nepal is a great place to be at. Whether you’re looking for an adventure, retreat, discovering a new place and it’s people, a photogenic landscape you can capture, explore your inner being and know about a great culture, then Nepal is definitely a place you need to visit!

Pokhara is one of the towns in Nepal. It is the second destination of tourists after Kathmandu. There are many ways you can go to Pokhara from Kathmandu, which I listed out on my previous post here.

We flew from Kathmandu to Pokhara and right where we landed, it has that feel of “Boracay” in Nepal. Of course, Nepal is land-locked and it doesn’t have any ocean or sea surrounding it. It has lakes, waterfalls and rivers though. Beside Phewa Lake (Fewa Lake). Beside the lake, there is a “City Centre” and it has little shops, restaurants, hotels, traveling agencies and even yoga places. Oh, they have Tattoo places there too! That’s where I got my first Tatt!

This town was full of tourists and reminds me so much of Boracay. It’s totally different and less crowded, but I would say, it had that sort of feel.

A 10-minute ride from the city centre would take us to our hotel in Pokhara. The serene hotel that lies on the lakeside – Watherfront Resort.

Waterfront Resort, Lakeside Pokhara

Our hotel was not far from the city center (10 minute ride). The town is even walkable as I would see some tourists walk or jog from our hotel to the city. If you don’t want to walk, the hotel has a van that you can ride to the city 3 times a day. If I’m not mistaken, 11am to 5:30pm. Also, they have FREE pick-up and drop-off to the airport.

Like I said, Waterfront Resort is not far from the city center, yet its location is away from pollution and noise. It was a perfect place to unwind, relax, enjoy the view, and be with nature without having to go far the center.

We wakeup to morninings that light up the lakeside and the hills where the Peace Pagoda rests. It’s pretty chilly in the mornings and you will see fog covering some parts of the mountain in a mysterious way, then it will slowly unfold at around 9am to reveal the mountain, the lake and the Pagoda.

You will also see local fishermen taking out their rods or paddling their boats with their nets.

Mid morning, the land warms up and you will see paragliders coming to land beside the hotel. Quite a relaxing sight especially when you dip in the pool or enjoy a cappuccino on your own balcony.

Oh, and when you do visit Pokhara and stay at Waterfront, bring a book! It really has a great view and simply, you just want to spend time taking it slow with the scenery.

Location

Pokhara’s Waterfront Resort lies on the tranquil rural northern shore of the beautiful Phewa Lake. With supremely comfortable, air-conditioned en suite rooms, each with a lake-view balcony, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Nepal’s main source of energy is hydro-electric (through waterfalls) and they say it’s not enough to power all communities so at night, you will experience a bit of power surge and black-outs. Waterfront is equipped with power generator so you wouldn’t have to worry about this.

Commuting and Transportation

Pokhara’s Waterfront Resort is just a 10-minute ride from the airport, and just a 15-minute walk from the busy tourist hub or 5 minutes in a taxi. There’s no need to walk: the hotel provides free shuttle service into Lakeside at intervals throughout the day.

Facilities

Waterfront Pokhara is fairly a new hotel when we stayed there. Despite the complete ammenities that they have, the manager said, they will still improve a lot of things for this place.

Lush Experience

Overall, we had a great stay here at Waterfront Resort in Pokhara. We stayed here for three days and we had a hard time leaving. The staff of the hotel were very helpful and would address our concerns quickly. They would help with our questions regarding activities around the area and enjoying Pokhara. It’s pretty sweet when the staff suggested restaurants we should try and then the next day, follow-up on us if we liked it.

Management and staff are very friendly, it seems like they don’t treat us as costumers but as friends. I can see it also when they talk to other tourists and foreigners currently staying at their hotel.

There are different kinds of transportation from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back. Depending on which mode of transportation you pick, it will definitely be an experience.

For the different transportations, feel free to book them on your own but for hassle-free, safe and convenient booking do it through a trusted and registered travel agency. This will make sure you don’t waste precious time while in Nepal and have the agency take care of logistics for you.

Again, I would recommend Himalayan Encounters travel agency. I don’t gain any commission promoting them, I just had a great experience with them and I felt safe and at ease. Also, they have offices in different parts of Nepal. Plus, they are environment conscious and practice eco-socio-tourism That just means they take care of the environment and at the same time, teach the locals in different areas how to be tour-guides and provide jobs as well as training young volunteers to get them ready while they’re in school.

A few things to have in mind:

Traveling from Kathmandu to Pokhara (Pokhara and Kathmandu) takes about 200 km

By land, it would take you 6-8 hrs depending on road conditions and your mode of transportation

By air, it would take you 20 mins

Nepal doesn’t have the best roadworks

If you travel by car, or bus – enjoy the view!

Drink anti-dizzy tabs if you are prone to motion sickness as some areas are zigzags

The roads are dusty, bring masks

If you have a bladder the size of a peanut like me, don’t drink too much water

Most transportation stop at cheap restaurants by the side of the road, it will be your chance to “release” nature, but their toilets aren’t the best

I inquired about car rentals and for 5 days, the rate would be at around USD 300. This included land trip to Pokhara, use of car for 5 days. It also includes gas and driver’s accommodations. It is a great choice when there’s 2-4 of you in a trip. It’s the most convenient way to go around Kathmandu and Pokhara, and other neighboring towns like Banipur, Lumbini (birthplace of Buddha) and Chitwan.

With this option, you can drop by any nice place you want. The driver also acts as your tour guide sometimes.

For car rentals, you can book via Travel agencies just to make sure you’re safe. We had ours taken cared of by Himalayan Encounters. We had a good driver who also took us on a side trip to Bandipur and Trusili River. Say you know about them through Flaircandy.com and WhenInManila.com and maybe ask for discount

Nepal sample itinerary with car rental cost

Going around Nepal, here’s a sample itinerary and cost if you book a car rental.

Kathmandu – Pokhara – Palpa – Lumbini – Chitwan route for 4 nights, 5 days road trip will cost USD284 for a 5 seater Sedan (4 passengers + 1 driver) 4 passengers max

IF there’s more of you, you can pay in addition and they will book vans or microbuses for you.

3. By Bus

You have different options:

Local Bus – It’s what the locals ride. It stops at almost everywhere and picks up everyone.

Micro / Mini Bus – best option if you are traveling in a big group

Tourist buses – if you’re on a budget and can’t afford Airfare or Car rental, take this. It is still best to book it via travel agency, again, I suggest Himalayan Encounters.

This is a micro bus (kinda like the jeep in Manila)

4. In the City

Whether you are in Pokhara or in Kathmandu or wherever else in Nepal, you can usually rent bikes, scooters or even horses to go around the city

I found a computer somewhere in our Hotel 😛 I’m currently in KL and while it’s very hot here, I’m so excited for the autumn weather in Nepal.

And I’m so excited I just need to write a blog post! Like I highlighted in this post, I will be staying in Kathmandu and Pokhara area. My mode for this trip is relaxation and maybe some slight meditation 😛

And so with Agoda.com, we booked the following hotels. Hotel accommodation is a huge part of my trip this time. Sometimes I hop from one place to another when I travel, but this time, since I want to enjoy the view and get comfortable, this is where I will stay.

Water Front Resort in Pokhara, Nepal

Hotel Dwarika’s in Kathmandu, Nepal

Kantipur Temple House in Kathmandu, Nepal

I wrote more about my trip here and how easy it is to go to Nepal these days also thanks to AirAsia new flights to Nepal!
